It has always bothered me, and the only reason I really care, is that back when I was a teenager, there was an idea that Japan was progressive in terms of lgbt+ material, but as I consumed this kind of media, I always felt just as restricted in what I could expect, as I felt within the reality of straight-dominating media. I freely admit that I have a distaste for how japanese media - both in animated form, and in conventional film - present homosexual/non-straight relationships. Thank you for taking the time to reply earnestly. It seems that based on the posts you should check out My Brother's Husband or My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness to explore the all the joys and hardships LGBT+ people experience in Japan or similar cultures.

One of the best anime of all time, Revolutionary Girl Utena (which also was posted here) had various LGBT characters but it was not the central theme/plot of the show.

That show was one of the most popular anime at the time. Yuri on Ice!! (posted earlier in the thread) is a figure skating sports anime that happens to have a gay character and love interest. You've pointed out how Yaoi has a history of being exploitative from your general experience and that isn't incorrect, but there has been a lot of progress in the genre. This isn't an unwarranted point of view at all, and with any media consumption it is good to be mindful of the context.įor any medium there will always be trash (like a majority of LN anime), and the "waifu" or "husbando" culture can get pretty problematic. I definitely think there is value in your posts, you're highlighting your personal experience with the medium and expressing what has seemed problematic.
